God Helps Those Who Help Themselves: Everybody desires greatness but very
few attain it. One of the reasons is that there are men who do not exert
themselves but depend on others. But self-interest is the best incentive to
work. If this interest does not prompt
us to do our own work for our own good. We cannot expect others to sacrifice
their interests to bring that good to us. Moreover, work done for others is
not generally done so well as work done by a person for himself. Besides,
dependence on others destroys self-confidence and does not allow the faculties
to develop. The result is that we fail in life. The lesson of the proverb is
taught by the well-known story of Hercules and Carter. A cart got stuck up
in mud when the bullocks failed to drag it out, and Carter prayed to Hercules
for help. God came but instead of doing anything himself told Carter to
put his shoulder to the wheel. This was done and the cart moved on. Really no
God or Goddess will come to our help if we do not help ourselves.

নিজেদের মঙ্গলের জন্য নিজেদের ইচ্ছা যদি আমাদেরকে আগ্রাহী করে না তোলে তবে কিছুতেই
আমরা আশা করতে পারি না যে অন্যেরা তাদের স্বার্থ ত্যাগ করে আমাদের মঙ্গল করবে। অধিকিন্তু
অন্যের কাজের চেয়ে নিজের কাজ বেশি ভালো হয়। তাছাড়া পরনির্ভরশীলতা আত্মবিশ্বাসকে নষ্ট
করে দেয় এবং এর দ্বারা নিজের উন্নয়ন ঘটে না। ফলে আমরা জীবনে ব্যর্থ হই। হারকিউলিস ও
গাড়োয়ানের গল্প থেকে প্রবাদটির শিক্ষা পাওয়া যায়। একটি গরুর গাড়ি কাদায় আটকে গেল। ষাঁড়
যখন গাড়ি টেনে বের করতে পারল না, তখন গাড়োয়ান হারকিউলিসের নিকট সাহায্য প্রার্থনা করল।
দেবতা এল কিন্তু নিজে কিছু না করে গাড়োয়ানকে বলল চাকা কাঁধ দিয়ে ঠেলতে। গাড়োয়ান তা
করল এবং গাড়ি চলতে লাগল। সত্যিই আমরা যদি নিজেরা নিজেদেরকে সাহায্য না করি তবে কোনো
দেবী বা দেবতাই আমাদের সাহায্য করতে আসবে না।
